Helene Scott

The history of Stokes Bay, Ontario, Canada could not be told with such clarity, if it were not for Helene (Murray) Scott. A great deal of gratitude is owed to her relentless quest to record the memories of the ‘Old Timers’ of the time. Most of the Tweedsmuir Books that are attributed to the community of Stokes Bay, were put together by Helene while she was gathering the information for her book “Old Timers’ Tales: A History of Stokes Bay and Surrounding Area (Bruce Peninsula)”.

Due to her efforts as well as the Stokes Bay Women’s Institute and many other sources, there is a multitude of information that has been preserved for our enjoyment today.

Old Timers’ Tales

The following contributors are gratefully acknowledged. Their stories within this book will long live on in memory of days that are no more:

  • Mrs. C.E. Byers (Annie Wyborn)
  • Mrs. Charlie Kyte (Ethel Martindale)
  • Arthur Shute
  • Hugh Ferguson, Knechtel Furniture Co., Hanover
  • Murdock Martin
  • Nathan Doran
  • Mrs. M. McKerracher (Marjorie Paterson)
  • Mrs. Herb Ebel (Amy Myles)
  • Vincent H. Elliott
  • Members of the Wyborn family, members of the Kleinscroth family and also the McKinney family
  • To the Wiarton Echo whose “bits and pieces” are ever interesting
  • Thanks to others who all can’t be mentioned
  • To my long-suffering family who endured talk of “Book” for the last forty years! To my sister Barbara Elliott for her poetry and to her daughter Barbie Tomkins, for the cover drawing of Lyal “Big” Island Lighthouse and to “That Man” no longer with us, who said, “It would never be done.”

Here it is, mistakes, errors and confusions. Like “Big Maggie” McLean we can only say, “We give it to you as twas give to me.”

May the shades of the Old Timers be happy, and sure that they are well remembered.
